When Time and Confusion Collide

So since a little before Saturday, at the very least, our water's been smelling a little funny.

You know when you leave flowers in a vase with water for too long, how the water smells horrible when you empty it? Like sewage, like something crawled in and died, and altogether rancid? Our water started smelling like that, only very, very faint. It was so faint that sometimes we couldn't smell it at all, which is probably why it took us a while to say, 'Hey, is it just me or is this wierd?'

It was Saturday night when we finally did, and it was Sunday when someone went up to the water tank up the hill and eyeballed it. Its outside was covered in thick layers of moss, and it occurred to us that it had been probably about a year since we'd all out cleaned the inside. We drew the conclusion that some of the vegetation had somehow gotten through, so we filled up a few jugs of water from a tap that was just before the pipe carried the water to the tank, and used those jugs for drinking and most cooking water. I'd drunk from the funny smelling water by now, and brushed my teeth, but I started using the new water for drinking (which didn't taste bad,) and went ahead and used bad water for brushing my teeth and showering and stuff. Because it was easier.

Today we finally got someone to take a look at the tank. They opened it up and looked inside.

Termites had broken through the top and tumbled in. They were floating around. I was almost as disgusted to find that out as I was to find tiny live maggots in a chocolate bar I'd been eating (for all that the package had been sealed), as well as some tiny dead ones almost perfectly camoflauged in some ramen dregs. After all, by now I've gotten used to the idea that humans have pretty strong stomachs, and that insects pretty are much a good source of protein.

I just kinda wish that my protein supplements hadn't been rotting, floating, and bloated.

We had no water today for about four hours while the tank was emptied and chugged with clorox. Our water smells kind of like that chemical now, but seeing as it means that there's no rancid-flower-vace smell, I'm willing to set the fact that chlorine was used in trench warfare for a reason aside.

In other news, I was late to Taekwondo but it was cool anyway. I talked with some old friends beforehand, which was probably one of the reasons we were late. After class I asked the taxi to wait for me while I ran to a grocery store, and now having veggies and icecream in hand the ride home was spiffy.

Hope everyone else had a good beginning of the week! Er, sans bug ick, of course!

  • Lol, termites.

Gah. Just thinking about it makes me shudder. Bugs. Nevermind that I eat the ocean equivalent. Somehow on land it's just... ugh. UGH.
    • Laaawl. D:

XD I agree--there's this difference between shrimp and land-bugs. Maybe it's because we're always going after the extermination of land-bugs everywhere to the point that bugs have been associated with disgust and uncleanliness automatically? Blaurgh.
